Transfer Day! A day that greatly affected missionaries' lives. Out of the
blue would come that envelope with new marching orders. Below are scans of
all the transfers that Elder Larsen had. If anyone has more and would scan
them at 75 dpi and email them to john@larsen-family.us I'll post them as
well. Elder John Larsen's first transfer was on November 28, 1975 to the city of Pau. Unfortunately, all of Elder Larsen's luggage had been stolen upon arriving in France. Mechanical problems with his connecting flight from New York to France made his group arrive in the evening instead of early afternoon. Instead of going to the hotel first, the office staff took the group directly to the restaurant for dinner. Elder Larsen's and another Elder's suitcases were left on the roof of the car during the meal and were stolen. Elder Larsen thought the office staff was playing a trick and didn't believe them until the next day when the whole group was meeting with President Broschinsky in his office for the first time. President Broschinsky expressed how badly he felt about the stolen luggage. That's when the truth of the whole situation hit Elder Larsen like a ton of bricks. I remember how tired Elder Carter looked when I arrived in Pau very late. Elder Stickney had taken me to the police station in Toulouse to report the theft before putting me on the train to Pau. Missionaries were always supposed to take the train closest to 6:30 AM so that their new companion would know when to meet them at the gare. Elders Carter, Nielsen, and VanWagoner had been to the gare several times before I finally showed up. Elder Carter asked, "Where's your luggage?" I replied, "What luggage?" and the whole tale came out. What a way to start a mission! Thanks to Kerry Branham for scanning transfer sheets he had from April 1978 through December 1979.
